Acidophilus Lactobacillus Bifidus
The medication, Acidophillus probiotic pessaries, is used to help prevent some types of bacterial infections.
- The surface lining of the healthy vagina contains microflora. These “friendly” bacteria (such as Lactobacillus acidophilus) are the main defence in maintaining the vagina in its naturally healthy state
- There are situations where the microflora balance will be disturbed, eg, during menopause or after antibiotics. Consequently the friendly bacteria are reduced or even eliminated, resulting in their protective effect being lost. Undesirable bacteria or yeast such as Candida albicans then dominate, often resulting in vaginal thrush.
- The medication as a probiotic pessary contains an active strain of lactobacillus acidophilus that will help maintain a healthy balance of microflora within the vagina.
- These probiotic pessaries are unique because each contains a high amount of live Lactobacillus acidophilus in a soluble pH balanced base. The pessary gradually dissolves releasing its probiotic activity so maximising contact time with the vaginal wall, thus replenishing the healthy state of the vaginal lining
